This auction is for a Lima (Italian Model Maker) model #163902G German "Bullet Train", the Lufthansa Airport Express Railcar. Includes one power unit and three coaches (trailers), ORGINAL box and item of manufacturer instructions. All parts are present on the model. It runs great forward and backward. A beautiful looking and operating, unique piece of German railroad history.
In 1955, the new Lufthansa was born. By the 1970s, Lufthansa built a large airline network in Germany, and competed with Bundesbahn. But some domestic lines were unprofitable. To solve the problem they operated the unprofitable lines by trains instead of airplanes. Lufthansa chartered Bundesbahn’s trains and operated them as one of their flights. Lufthansa decided to start this service first in the line between Düsseldorf and Frankfurt. For this service, electric multiple units of ET403/404 were used. This class was born as an InterCity train in 1973, but in 1979 it retired from daily service - Bundesbahn wanted to make better use of this train, so Lufthansa chartered a new train: the "Lufthansa Airport Express".
From January to February in 1982, three units of ET403 were rebuilt, and the color scheme of them was changed. The new color is light gray /yellow with Lufthansa's symbol and the logo "Lufthansa Airport Express". The interior became similar to that of a Lufthansa's DC10, and the galley was attached to each of the cars. Tables were attached to all seats of compartments. The seating capacity of one unit became 122. In March 20th 1982 the test run was done, and in 28th March the daily service was started between Frankfurt Flughafen (Airport) and Düsseldorf Hbf (From 1983 summer, Frankfurt Flughafen and Düsseldorf Flughafen). Everyday two units were used in a day, and the other unit stopped in Düsseldorf. Sometimes one or a few cars are coupled to a unit, and operated as a 5 or 6 or 7-car unit. The service was terminated in 1993.
