Description
dual view Postcard of an ice bound fleet of freighters (e.g., ore boats, lakers) at Michigan's Whitefish Bay in Lake Superior led by the Charles S. Hebard. Card was originally printed in 1924 but reprinted later (1930-45) based on the publishers S/N 97986-N and that the card stock is linen which were produced during that era.Freighters would position themselves at Whitefish Bay in sort of a procession to follow an icebreaker to cross a frozen Lake Superior at the onset of winter.
Charles Hebard was a lumber baron whose company had an influence from
Pequaming (Near Baraga and L'Anse Michigan) to the
Okefenokee Swamp. He established th
e first large-scale lumbering operation in the Upper Peninsula supplying wood used on the vehicles made by Ford Motor Company.
The Charles S Hebard, was a Great Lakes bulk freighter launched in 1906. when it was decommissioned, it was s
old for scrap 1964 and later filled with stone and sunk as part of St Mary's cement plant shipping terminal/dock for Medusa Portland Cement Co., Charlevoix MI.
